#Aperture 3 trial version won't open an existing Aperture 2 Library, but it can *import* it into a new AP3 Library. That does the trick.

Lightroom has worked better for me so far, but now Aperture 3 has geotagging built in. Worth the 30-day trial.

@karbassi Aperture isn't destructive at all, unless they added that as a feature in 3. I can't comment on slowness though.
